A photographic presentation by Mark Stothard MA ARPS
Photography, Sound, and the Unseen Stories of a Port Town
Most people arrive in Ouistreham by ferry and leave just as quickly. Engines running, they shoot straight down the motorway, heading for bigger, more familiar places. But what happens when you stop, slow down, and listen?
In this presentation, I share a personal journey through the coastal town of Ouistreham, in northern France. Combining photography, ambient audio, and field notes, this talk explores the town not as a tourist, but as a resident-for-a-while.
Guided by the principles of slow tourism, walking no more than six kilometres from the port, following instinct and light, looking for ordinary places made extraordinary by time and attention. My approach combines still images, sound recordings, and written reflections to create an immersive, multisensory narrative.
This is not a history lecture, though the legacy of World War II, the D-Day landings, and the shadow of war are impossible to ignore. Instead, it’s a talk about how we might see these spaces differently. Ouistreham is more than a ferry terminal. It’s a living landscape, shaped by memory, movement, and the everyday lives of those who remain.
