A publishing presentation by Mark Stothard MA ARPS

Many people have ideas, stories, research, or creative projects they would like to publish, but are unsure how to turn them into a finished book.

A publication allows your work to exist as a complete and lasting piece of writing or creative output. It creates a physical object that can be shared, collected, sold and archived. Yet many aspiring authors do not know where to start.

This talk explains how individuals can move from an idea or body of work to a finished publication.

The presentation draws on my experience as an award-winning photographer and educator, the publishing module I studied during my BA (Hons) in Photography at the University of Plymouth, and my current work publishing books, journals and zines.

The talk provides a practical overview of the publishing process, from shaping an idea into a structured publication through to producing and selling a finished book.

What You Can Expect:

  • Why we choose to publish our own books and zines and the shift toward independent publishing
  • Self-publishing compared with traditional publishing, including control, speed to market, costs, and distribution
  • Different publishing formats, including books, journals, and zines
  • Editing and sequencing images to create a clear narrative
  • Design and layout principles for publications
  • Print production, including paper choices, binding methods, and printing processes
  • Understanding publishing identifiers such as ISBN, ISSN, and GTIN
  • Pricing strategies, production costs, and calculating break-even points
  • Sales channels, including websites, exhibitions, bookshops, and online marketplaces
  • Marketing and audience building for independent publications

This conversational-style talk is in two halves: the first is a presentation of approx 60 minutes, then, after an interlude, we can continue with any questions.

If you are in the UK, the talk can be delivered in person; if further afield, via Zoom, which I host.

Ideal for:

  • Libraries, camera clubs, arts societies, history interest groups, and anyone who believes they wish to produce a publication

Costs:

  • The talk is £150 (£83.33+vat), which includes a £50 (£41.66+vat) non-refundable booking deposit
