A photographic presentation by Mark Stothard MA ARPS

Photographing Residual Landscapes, Space, Structure, Atmosphere.

This illustrated talk explores how landscape can hold layers of history beneath its surface and how you can translate that depth into strong, deliberate photographs.

Drawing on my work in former military training grounds, I examine how concrete, terrain, and light shape meaning within the frame. The emphasis is on photographic judgement and visual control.

What You Can Expect:

  • Introduction to the narrative
  • How to read the space before making an exposure
  • How structure and geometry guide composition
  • Barthes’ studium and punctum in practical image making
  • Massumis’ affect theory in understand what you see
  • How affect shapes the viewer’s response to place
  • How walking, research, and observation strengthen long-term projects

This conversational-style talk is in two halves: the first is a presentation of approx 45 – 60 minutes, then, after an interlude, we can continue with any questions.

If you are in the UK, the talk can be delivered in person; if further afield, via Zoom, which I host.

I’m continuing to explore the emotional and narrative depth of image-making >> more

Ideal for:

  • Camera clubs, arts societies, history interest groups, and anyone who believes photography can ask questions, not just make records

Costs:

  • The talk is £120 (£100+vat), which includes a £30 (£25+vat) non-refundable booking deposit
